I spent the bulk of my day researching government benefits online and then calling to schedule appointments for my parents. Got to love the Internet! All this information at the palm of your hands.
When my parents social security benefits statement arrived last week and their benefits increased by a whopping 1.7 percent. Because you know... the rise in the cost of living.
This is ridiculous of course, considering how much is deducted to pay for medicare. Still, its free money being sent to my parents so I shouldn't be so bitter. I'm just upset with how much medicare didn't cover during my mom's 4 months of recovery from sepsis. Especially when she was denied SSI and medicaid because she was paying for my life insurance back then.
Fortunately the social security administration is expanding their online services.
First stop: www.socialsecurity.gov
At the moment all you can do is register so you can see your benefits. They also have a lot of information and an online application to apply for disability benefits - preliminary step if you're going to apply for SSI.
Second stop: www.benefitscheckup.org
I highly recommend that site if you know retired individuals in need of extra help.
Got a couple appointments next week and hopefully my parents get approved for all the benefits they are eligible for.
